CE+CA was approached by South Yorkshire Housing Association to conduct an ideas study surrounding the proposed renovation of an old purpose built hostel into two self contained dwellings.
A series of feasibility sketches explored how large homes could be achieved through numerous alterations. We took a fabric-first approach to this retrofit project while planning for future installation of renewable energy sources. The wider benefit of the refurbishment is opportunity to improve the appearance of the building to a more contextually appropriate building. The project also considered keeping both short and long terms costs low alongside spatial and material opportunities.
The site is located on a quiet street very close to Sheffield City Centre. The neighbourhood dates back to the early 19th Century and is typified by a mixture of semi detached and terraced housing. Before the current building was built there were semi detached houses on the site which would have been similar to the neighbouring properties.
The current property is brick and block built cavity wall construction with a concrete tiled roof. There is a pastiche entrance doorway with a faux period lintel and pilasters. Openings to the south look directly on to the wall of the neighbouring property, but have all been boarded up since the building became vacant.
