This week we have said a sad farewell to our Part 2 Architectural Assistant Kayleigh who has been working with us since 2023.

Kayleigh has brought an abundance of creativity and positivity to our team and will be greatly missed. We wish her all the best for her forthcoming adventures (which include a joinery course!).

Thanks for everything Kayleigh!

Some sketches for a new house on the edge of the Peak District National Park, currently at pre-application stage.

The sensitive site is steeply sloping, with views across the valley. Formerly a farmstead, it has evolved and adapted over the past few 350 years, remaining in a constant state of flux. The proposal represents the next stage in the site’s ongoing evolution.

The simple, tapered form of the proposed upside-down house is shaped by the negative space between an existing old stone wall and the footprint of the former cottage.

Rather than erasing what came before, the remains of the cottage are retained within the landscape, creating a palimpsest of the site’s history and providing a connection between the old and new.

A lovely blast from the past! Little did we think that when CE+CA director, Howard Evans first won RIBA Yorkshire Practice Architect of the Year in that 10 years later we’d be working in @sumstudios but here we are in the @architectsjournal sharing the same page celebrating the @ribayorkshire 2015 regional awards! Thanks @joncarrstructuraldesign for brining the magazine in to the office 😁#architecture #yorkshirearchitects #sheffieldarchitects

We recently completed a feasibility study for the redevelopment of an underutilised site, investigating how it could accommodate 3–5 new homes.

Using a series of 3D sketch proposals, we explored a range of layouts, massing strategies and architectural forms, helping our client understand the site's potential before moving into the next stage of design.

From more traditional approaches to contemporary interpretations, each option responds differently to the opportunities and constraints of the site.

Which scheme do you prefer?

Team site visit to Glade House, Wakefield.

It was great to see the excellent progress being made on the project and to spend some time together outside the office. Visiting our projects in person is always a valuable part of the design process, giving the whole team the chance to see ideas taking shape on site.

It's been fantastic welcoming them both to the team. Their enthusiasm, fresh perspectives, and positive energy have already made a real impact, and we're looking forward to seeing them get involved in some exciting projects over the coming months.

Welcome, Chloe and Sam!

We’ve recently received planning permission for an exciting extension and reconfiguration of a Victorian semi-detached house within a conservation area in Sheffield.

Here are some early work-in-progress sketches focused on improving the flow of the home and strengthening its connection to the garden. The design introduces a void and new staircase that links the basement with the ground floor, providing direct access to the garden and allowing much more light to reach the lower level.

We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the RIBA East Midlands Award for our Amber Cottage project in The Peak District National Park. We look forward to the judges’ visit later in the year.

Amber Cottage is built on a tiny site in the centre of a village in the Peak District. There were ruined remains of a small stone storage barn, just partial walls and a lot of rubble.

The project is the result of careful negotiation with the client, neighbours, planners, and service providers that has resulted in a cottage that looks as if it has been there for centuries but with a contemporary crisp roof and fenestration.

We have recently undertaken a feasibility study for a semi-detached house in Leeds to help the client decide whether to 'move or improve'. The house has previously been subject to a number of alterations and extensions, creating various awkward spaces.

Our study explored ways to improve the existing layout, along with a range of options to extend. The client also wanted to look at improving circulation, thermal performance and visual coherence.

A lovely visit to see our recently completed barn

A lovely visit to see our recently completed barn update. The listed barns had been converted in the late 1990’s. Our work has focused on rationalising existing spaces to create a larger kitchen, form new visual links through the house, capturing light and views. The stairs have been completely reimagined with new joinery connecting the multiple levels of the house. Our favourite moment is a new window between hallway and dining area - it sits above bench level on one side but floor level the other.

We recently welcomed James to the team.

James graduated with distinction from the University of Sheffield this past summer and started with us in early September. Since joining, he has been contributing to several projects, including developing proposals for a new-build house on the edge of Sheffield and handling alterations for smaller residential projects.

James enjoys cycling and cheese sandwiches. We have enjoyed welcoming James to the team over the past few months.
